Sarnia-Lambton Golden K Kiwanis History
In the winter of 1989, disussions were held regarding the formation of a new Kiwanis Club in Sarnia, to be sponsored by the Seaway Kiwanis Club. At the time, there were 2 other clubs existing in the city - The Kiwanis Club of Sarnia, Inc. and Seaway.
On Dec. 19, 1989 the first official meeting of the new club was held at the Lochiel Kiwanis Community Centre.
Charlie Woodward, Lt. Governor of Division 3 of the Eastern Canada and Caribbean District installed the first officers of the club at a Charter Night in June 1990.
There were originally 20 men signed up as charter members.
PRIMARY MISSION:
WE BUILD, primarily through service, by giving priority to projects aimed at improving the well-being of children and by participating in projects aimed at improving the quality of life in the community. The club also reached out to help other agencies in compatible interests which included:
- Sarnia Kiwanis Foundation - which administers the Lochiel Kiwanis Community Centre (LKCC)
- Community groups which call the LKCC home
- Organization for Literacy Sarnia-Lambton
- Boys and Girls club of Sarnia
- Sarnia Lambton YMCA
- Harmony for Youth
- Bluewater Health Foundation - Neonatal Care Centre
As time moved on, more community opportunities arose and these Kiwanians rose to the occassions which filled the gaps.
On April 30, 2013, the Kiwanis Club of Sarnia, Inc. amalgamated with the Sarnia-Lambton Golden K Kiwanis Club, creating the club that now exists today.
