What Keeps Us Busy!
This year 2026 will mark the 36th year for the Kiwanis Club of Sarnia-Lambton Golden K in service and support of the children and youth in the City of Sarnia and Lambton County. The Kiwanis Club of Sarnia-Lambton Golden K (GK) support and sponsor the following local children and youth leadership development programs:
Terrific Kids at PE McGibbon, London Road, Rosedale, Cathcart, High Park, Bridgeview, Errol Village and Queen Elizabeth II Schools
Builders Club at PE McGibbon, London Road, Rosedale and Queen Elizabeth II Schools.
Key Club at Great Lakes Secondary School.
GK members run weekly Maths and Literacy tuition sessions with individual students at several of the above-listed Schools.
GK members volunteer for the Student Nutrition Program one day a week at PE McGibbon, High Park and Queen Elizabeth II Schools and prepare snacks for the children at school.
Key Leader Camp: GK sponsors the attendance of 6-10 students each year from the local community to attend a weekend long team building and leadership development camp. o Key Leader by Kiwanis is a weekend leadership development program held in the fall each year in Brantford for high school and graduating 8th Grade students. Our mission is to inspire young people to achieve their personal best through service leadership. o Key Leader teaches service leadership and social-emotional skills essential for students to become values-driven leaders. Based on Robert Greenleaf's "Servant Leadership" model and delivered to more than 33,000 students around the world since 2005. ·
AKTION Club: GK sponsors an AKTION Club for adults with disabilities in conjunction with Sarnia-Lambton Community Living.
What else we Do -
- Scholarships: GK award 2-3 scholarships per year to eligible local students to support their higher education studies.
- Dolly Parton Imagination Library: GK sponsors the DPIL in our community, where books are provided free of charge each month to more than 150 children ages 0 to 5 years in support of early childhood literacy. ·
- Science Education Partnership. We are active participants providing funding and volunteers for the Science Education Partnership that introduces elementary students to Science, Engineering, Technology and Agriculture. The Science Education Partnership is a unique collaboration between education, business and community that provides science resources for educators within the Lambton Kent District School Board and the St. Clair Catholic District School Board. According to the most recent annual report, this program impacted an estimated 20,000 + students in Lambton-Kent. We estimate that our GK members expend over 2,500 hours per year in supporting local children and youth leadership development programs in our community.
- In addition, our GK members participate in several community-based volunteer programs such as:
- Lambton Public Health Movie Nights – we provide popcorn to the children and families attending.
- Red Cross Meals on Wheels
- Inn of the Good Shepherd lunch program
- STAPLES Back to School program
- Literacy Lambton ‘Train Your Brain’ volunteers
- Salvation Army Christmas Kettle volunteers
- Bluewater International Granfondo volunteers
- Bluewater Health Dream Home volunteers
- Kinsman Christmas Parade float assembly volunteers.
- We estimate that our GK members provide over 1,300 hours per year in supporting the local community through these activities. Our members also provide community support through our K-Krew program – we volunteer to help elderly individuals with things such as yard clean up / trimming bushes / spreading mulch or minor household repairs such as painting.
- We actively support the Inn of the Good Shepherd Mobile Market program – GK volunteers pick at least four bushels of apples a week in season and donate these to the Inn for distribution via the Mobile Market or to local schools for the School Nutrition Program. In 2023, in partnership with the City of Sarnia, we replaced the play equipment in McGibbon Park. This benefits the local community and all the children that use the Lochiel Kiwanis Community Center.
- Fundraising c-Gaming: We are grateful of the opportunity to participate in the OLG / OCGA / Jackpot Time program where we raise funds through volunteering at Jackpot Time. We use the funds raised to support local children and youth charities. In the past few years, we have made donations from our c-Gaming funds to The Inn of the Good Shepherd, Boys and Girls Club of Sarnia-Lambton, Literacy Lambton, St Clair Child and Youth Services, Dolly Parton Imagination Library, Mastermind Youth Foundation, Harmony for Youth, School Nutrition Program and the Sarnia Community Foundation.
- Pop and Beer Can Recycle Collection: We collect pop cans, and alcoholic beverage containers at 6 sites in Sarnia-Lambton and raise funds through container deposit refunds and scrap metal payments.
- Other: We also raise funds through the sale of Claxton Cakes at Christmas and though our club membership fees and donations from organizations and individuals. Paul Woolley GK President
